(June 30, 2004) - The guided missile destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58) passes the battleship USS New Jersey museum as she pulls into Penn's Landing pier in Philadelphia, Pa. on the Delaware River. Laboon is taking part in the city's "Let Freedom Ring" Fourth of July celebration. The celebration includes free concerts, fireworks and a ceremony honoring Afghanistan leader Hamid Karzai. Laboon will host visitors for two days of tours, while Philadelphia recruiters will be on hand to explain Navy opportunities to interested visitors.

 | 2004 | Philadelphia, PA (July 14, 2004) - Rear Admiral Jeffrey Fowler, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, speaks at an all-hands call to members of Navy Recruiting District Philadelphia. The admiral talked to recruiters and support staff about active duty and reserve consolidation, and recruiting goals and challenges. In response to recruiters' questions, he also spoke of keeping awards significant and merit-based, and about the tattoo trend among young people that may be disqualifying good candidates from military careers.

 | 2004 | Sergeant Leonardo Howell, a recruiter at Recruiting Sub Station Flatbush, N.Y., was presented a "Sudden Impact" travel mug with an embossed pewter logo Sept. 1, by Maj. J.J. Dill, commanding officer of Recruiting Station N.Y., for writing the first contract of the month. This is part of a campaign to build momentum for first and second phase line by awarding recruiters and Staff Non Commissioned Officers In Charge who write contracts early in the month. Each recruiter who writes a contract before or on the first phase line is presented with a “Sudden Impact” travel mug. Each SNCOIC who makes his second phase line objective will also receive one. Howell recruited Thomas Brown, an 18-year-old graduate of James Madison High School, Brooklyn, N.Y. “Marines will do their job regardless, but competitions like this keep us motivated,” Howell said.

The band gave a free concert to a packed house at the city’s Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium. The performance helped foster relations with the local community and assisted local recruiters with their efforts of enlisting musicians into the Marine Corps.
