 | 1937 | Aboard a trawler (locally called a dragger). The power-driven winch lets out the starboard net. While over fishing grounds one of two nets is constantly in the water, dragging along the bottom. Boats are powerful, diesel-engined, between forty and seventy-five feet long. Their unrestricted use has done much to cause the "fish-famine" along this coast because nets bring up everything, fish, minnows and even spawn. Provincetown, Massachusetts.

 | 1937 | Aboard a trawler. The net comes aboard. Each net (there are two) usually drags about an hour, is then brought aboard by the power winch. Crew and captain work on "shares." Commonly one share to each man, one to captain and one to boat. Captain maintains boat. Provincetown, Massachusetts.

 | 1937 | In the cabin of the Beatrice S., a beam-trawler which was one of a considerable fleet that fished out of Provincetown as late as '37. Today there is a mere handful of these boats left. Their practice is at sea, wherever the water is shallow enough to allow the nets to drag until a catch is made, sometimes several days. This cabin is the living, dining, bedroom and kitchen. | 1937 | Aboard a trawler. Selecting fish and cutting off heads. Only mackerel, whiting and occasional flounder or halibut are kept. Thrown from trough into ice-filled hold. Fish heads and non-marketable fish are thrown into sea above which hundreds of seagulls wait hungrily. Provincetown, Massachusetts.
